 I don't know what other people are talking about. I use this monitor to play games with on my PC. It is certainly useful in more than just reading Word Documents. Bright ? what do people mean when they say a TV monitor is not bright enough ? If it isn't turn up the brightness...LOL.. And it certainly isn't "Cheap" feeling.
IT ISN'T a Widescreen...DUH, so don't complain about it not being one or compare it to a widescreen.
AND it ISN'T a LED BACKLIT Monitor !! All this you know BEFORE you buy it. It's a basic decent 17 inch monitor. My movies look great on it but that is a partial function of my video card too.
I have a top notch Video card and PC and I have found this to be a superb little monitor, but I am going to a larger screen soon, although I'm not crazy about widescreens.
At any rate before you go judging this monitor, think about the rest of your system first. It will certainly bring out the flaws in your integrated video chipsets and inexpensive PCs, but at 17 inches it just doesn't cut it anymore even for "Word Documents".
IF you are still using a 15 inch or even 17 inch CRT it is a nice upgrade for a good price. I have had very good luck with ACER products over the years.........................

I did a lot of research and added this monitor to my 2010 Christmas wish list. I was excited to find this baby under my Christmas tree. I'm actually a Dell guy coming from a 5 year old Dell 1905FP LCD. I was nervous not sticking with a Dell but I had an old ViewSonic CRT around 2000 or 2001 and it was great and I simply couldn't pass up adding such an affordable LED monitor to my Christmas list. I did look for a Dell and LG of this size and specs but they couldn't come close to the price. Would I still choose this ViewSonic? Absolutely! You cannot go wrong with this monitor as long as you can find it at a good price ($200-$220).

Styling:
The piano-black plastic looks really nice. The pictures online make the monitor look a little cheap and odd with the clear plastic along the bottom. Once I unboxed the unit and set it up on my desk I was very pleased. The larger glowing power button under the ViewSonic label within the clear plastic is nice. The buttons to navigate the brightness/contrast are touch sensitive which is cool. The base works very well and keeps the monitor in place though I wish it would pivot left to right. The monitor will only pivot forward and back (not left/right or telescope up/down).

Connection:
I have a Dell laptop with a HDMI and VGA output. The monitor only has VGA and DVI input. The lack of the monitor not having HDMI is why I gave it 4 stars. I plan on purchasing a little adapter but still surprised they elected not to incorporate HDMI.................................

I got this one to replace my older i-Inc. monitor. It really is an improvement. Rich colors, really good contrast. I calibrated it (crudely, by using software called MCW). Really nice after calibration. One thing I did not like at all is how much side-illumination shows up. I guess those LEDs do need to be bright enough, but I never thought they would be THIS noticeable. It shows as a veil of dark gray around the perimeter of the screen. And when whatever on the screen is dark enough you will see it. Sometimes barely noticeable, sometimes annoyingly obvious. And one other thing. The power supply is a separate brick - like in the laptop. Plan on locating it behind the monitor, etc. Otherwise - a very nice monitor, no dead pixels, no other issues............................

This monitor has taken some flack for the way it sounds, so I will review this first. As far as sound goes, the built-in speakers are not very nice sounding from what I tried of them, although this was without the included software which is intended to improve their sound output. However, fitting amazing speakers in such a tight place as this really thin monitor is not possible due to the reality of sound production requiring a certain speaker size to produce various frequencies due to simple physics of vibration creation. If you want good sound though, all you have to do is buy a nice, inexpensive pair of computer speakers such as Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with Subwoofer and plug them into the sound output on the back of the monitor and it will route all of the sound input from the HDMI into them, which is quite nice.

That said, keep in mind that first and foremost you are purchasing an LCD monitor. Its true purpose is to display your desktop, images, videos and etc from your computer (or your Xbox 360, PS3, Blu-Ray player and etc), not to play sound. In that realm, as far as 24" monitors go from what I have seen and used, this is simply the best I have seen when compared to displays from vendors such as ASUS and Apple. The colours are extremely vivid and the viewing angles are very nice (can see movies/games from the extreme sides). The back-lighting is perfectly balanced, non-bleeding and it is great for watching HD movies as well as playing games or doing standard web browsing. It is also extremely thin and light despite being 24"............................
